If there was ever a chair material that defined Mid-Century Modern in the US, it was bent plywood.
Here is a fantastic example of MCM American design. This is a pair of bent plywood "scoop" chairs from Carter Brothers.
I estimate that these chairs are from around the mid-1950's. This was the original scoop chair done by Carter Brothers up until 1958, after which the chair was slightly redesigned to use a single cushion for the seat and back, rather than the dual cushions on these chairs.
As rare as the single-cushion version is, the two-cushion model is even more sought-after and extremely difficult to find.
The chair's body is comprised of a single piece of plywood, bent into shape. Atop the body are two cushions, done in eye-catching button-tufted orange vinyl. The chair sits on 4 screw-in legs. They measure about 2 feet wide and 34 inches tall.
Condition: As you can see from the pictures, they are still in very good condition, and still very structurally sound and amazingly sturdy. There are some scratches and marks they have accumulated over the years. The cushions have a few marks on them, but are still very resilient, and the tufted buttons are still holding strong. There seems to be something like a rather small burn mark on each seat, but it doesn't go through to the foam inside. No tears. One chair has a bit of veneer missing on one corner, but that is actually a pretty easy fix.
In all, these chairs are ready to use the moment you unpack them and screw the legs back on!!
Chairs are sold as-is, no returns. So if you have any questions, PLEASE ask before purchasing or making an offer.
THREE shipping options are available:
- Greyhound ("Economy Shipping") for $100. If you choose Greyhound, I will need to know what Greyhound station you want the chairs shipped to.
- "Standard Shipping" for $200. Via UPS or FEDEX Ground. I will ship the chairs only within the 48 contiguous US states. No Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico.
- Local pick-up. The chairs are also available for local pick-up or if you have a preferred carrier you normally work with (you pay your carrier for the shipping cost). The carrier must be located within the greater Cleveland, Ohio area.
If you happen to live within a few states of Ohio and are interested in these chairs, let me know which shipping option you're interested in since I can probably get you a lower shipping rate.
I'm in LOVE with scoop chairs. I have yet to come across one (or a pair) at an estate sale in all my years of sailing but maybe some day! Great color on these. Drool!
ReplyDeleteWow, I love these, including the color of the cushions. They would go nicely with the Danish mid-century couch I'm inheriting from my mother once I find my own house.
